Plant varieties need protection from climate change
15.11.2011 08:19 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments around the world are being urged to develop policies to protect traditional food crops and varieties of plants which are threatened by climate change.
The call has come from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization on the tenth anniversary of a global treaty to protect and share plant genetic resources.
There are more than 1.5 million samples of plant genetic material, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The agency warns that climate change, floods, droughts, plant pests, plant diseases and other factors are threatening the survival of varieties of this genetic material.
FAO says the plants are protected under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
Under the treaty’s Benefit Sharing Fund farmers and breeders in 21 countries are receiving assistance to adapt to these new conditions.
