Global economic crisis no “excuse” not to help the poor
19.09.2011 09:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The poor global economic outlook cannot be an excuse for developed countries not to help poor countries, according to the United Nations Secretary-General.
On Friday, Ban Ki-moon launched a report of a task force set up in 2007 to assess progress in funding the anti-poverty millennium development goals, or MDGs.
Mr. Ban said that although last year, donors provided $129 billion in official development assistance, there is still a gap in what has been promised.
«Certainly the global economic outlook remains sobering. But this cannot be an excuse not to deliver. We cannot afford to leave the poor even further behind. Donors are still less than half way towards fulfilling their promise to provide aid amounting to 0.7 per cent of their income,» admitted Ban Ki-moon.
The Secretary-General said most of the donors plan to drastically limit aid flows over the next three years, precisely when the poorest countries and people need them most.
