Land degradation is affecting 1.5 billion people around the world, according to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
Luc Gnacadja, the Executive Secretary of the convention, was speaking at a meeting in Rome where experts are warning that pressure on the world’s soil resources, as well as land degradation are threatening global food security.
Mr. Gnacadja says that it is the poor people mainly in Asia and Africa who are affected by poor soils.
«Globally, land degradation affects 1.5 billion people. This population lives on degrading and land where poverty and hunger are endemic. For instance, when poverty is classified according to the infant mortality rate, 32 per cent of the very poor and 32 per cent of the moderately poor in the world live in degraded areas compared with only 15 per cent of the non-poor,» says Gnacadja.
