06.09.2010 11:19 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
crop tour through southern and midwestern Ontario has turned up generally strong corn and soybean yield potential, according to a press release yesterday.
The three-day Great Lakes Grain Crop Assessment Tour the first of its kind in Ontario concluded on Aug. 27 with a total of 17 stops and 2,800 corn and 1,575 soybean yield checks.
The overall average soybean yield was estimated at 49.5 bu/acre, although the range in yield was particularly wide, from 33 to 74 bu. The average soybean yield in the southwest was pegged at 53 bu, ranging from 40 to 74 bu. The midwest yield was estimated at 45.7 bu.
For corn, the average southwest yield was estimated at 173 bu/acre and the midwest yield at 180 bu.
In the case of both soybeans and corn, the average yield estimates were pulled a bit lower by the northern midwest growing areas of Stayner and Elmvale.
