Latvia is fourth largest grain exporter in EU
06.08.2010 12:34 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Latvia is the fourth largest grain exporter among EU member states, said Indulis Jansons, board chairman of the Latvian Association of Agricultural Cooperatives (LLKA), on public television Tuesday.
Jansons said it was too early to say whether this year had been good or bad for the Latvian crop farmers. «We will only have the money in fall. In any case, this year has been extraordinary, because we had a very harsh winter and many winter crops did not survive it; then the hot summer followed, which was dry in some places and too wet in other places. All of this had an effect on the crop yield. I think we will have an average yield,» Jansons said.
He said the crop yield was not good in the world this year, so the grain price would be advantageous for farmers.
Jansons said that Latvia was a major exporter in this area and ranked fourth among EU grain exporters. «We are able to produce and sell the production successfully. We have all the necessary things for doing it I dont see any obstacles there,» the LLKA board chairman said.
He said the best-organized farming sectors in Latvia were the dairy sector and the crops sector. «But there are sectors with huge problems like the meat sector. We have great opportunities, we can produce pork, but for some unknown reasons we are unable to do it,» Jansons said.
In 2008, the crop yield in Latvia was rather low, and the low purchase prices made the situation of crop farmers even worse.
