US asked to explain meat embargo to Brazil
04.06.2010 11:51 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Brazil has told the US it needs clarification on which methods it uses to test processed meat imports for residues.
Agricultural experts will travel to the US to seek the clarification, which has already led to ill feeling.
Brazils government imposed a ban on exports of processed meat to the US last week after a shipment was inspected at the US end and found to contain traces of a medicine exceeding the limit.
With the US is the main market for Brazilian processed meat, the governments are hoping the problem will be resolved soon so Brazil can resume exports.
Officials at the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry have said they requested details on tests used Brazilian beef but the methodology provided by the US had lacked key details.
Test that were used initially to look for residues in the liver of cattle, were now being tested on muscle tissue.
The ministry said there was doubt the test had ever been approved for use on heat-treated, processed meats.
The tests by US authorities showed the presence of Ivermectin, a de-wormer medicine used to expel intestinal worms.
