French and British Cereal Growers Meet

Anglo-French relations were at the forefront last week as a British National Farmers’ Union combinable crops team met with their European counterparts to share strategy and ideas for the industrys future.
Representatives from the French Crop Producers’ Union, which looks after the interests of wheat, barley and oat growers, were in the UK to visit English farms and learn more about how British farmers have adapted to policy decisions in recent years.
Agri-environmental schemes, SPS and cross compliance were on the agenda for discussion. French farmers were also keen to learn how the NFU-backed Campaign for the Farmed Environment and farm assurance schemes have been developed to help avoid official regulation and add value to the industry.
Happening over election night on 6 to 7 May, the visit was a timely occasion for two of Europe’s major cereal producing and consuming nations to discuss potential alliances on the CAP and its future after 2013.
Speaking after the event, chief arable adviser Guy Gagen said: "This opportunity for the NFU and AGBP to meet and discuss CAP reform for 2013 in advance of the European Commission position later in 2010 was extremely valuable.
"We face real challenges to meet growing global demand, mitigate climate change and ensure our farmers are allowed to compete fairly and participate in a growing market for cereal crops. It was striking how much influence environmental campaigners now have in France and this emphasised the value of farmers working together on ideas that can help fend off unnecessary and costly regulation.
«We shared ideas with French farmers on how to cope with the new challenges and new agriculture policy concepts that might help European arable farming’s resilience over the next 15 years with the shared objective of making agricultural and rural development support work properly for farmers.»
The trip involved visits to farms in East Anglia, run by Robert Law and farms run by Andrew Watts, to learn about cross compliance, paid and voluntary environmental schemes and the Assured Food Standards ACCS scheme. The voluntary schemes have been developed to fit in with farming and business structures and are designed to help UK farmers compete on increasingly global food and energy markets.
