Nestlé’s Easter egg packaging tops MP’s report
08.04.2010 11:28 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Nestlé’s Easter egg packaging has been hailed in a new Member of Parliament report.
Jo Swinson, Liberal Democrat MP for the Scottish county of East Dunbartonshire, revealed that Nestlé is the only company which offers 100% widely recycled packaging for its Smarties Easter egg, in the annual Easter Egg Packaging: Annual Progress Report.
Ms Swinson said in the report: «The emphasis needs to be not just on reducing packaging, but also ensuring it is recyclable, as 6 out of the 10 products surveyed here still use some materials which end up in landfill. Furthermore, only one of the eggs (Nestlé) produced a package which was 100% ‘widely recycled’.»
In addition, Ms Swinson stated that Nestlé should be «applauded for providing clear recycling information on the back of the boxes.»
As part of its ongoing programme to reduce packaging, 90% of Nestlé UKs Easter egg packs are recyclable in 2010 an increase of 10% from last year.
Nestlé has also backed its commitment to corporate responsibility having signed up to the Waste and Resources Action Programme’s (WRAP) Seasonal Confectionery Working Group; to work together to reduce seasonal packaging.
The environmental boost follows on from the Company’s eco-friendly approach since last year. In 2009, Nestlé UK announced an industry first by removing plastic packaging from its Easter egg range.
Favourite Nestlé brands including Smarties, Kit Kat, Aero and Milky Bar were packaged in an easily recyclable cardboard basket. Packaging across its entire range was reduced by 30% and around 80% of its eggs were packaged with fully-recyclable material.
