Ministry of Agrarian Policy: sugar beet sown areas will be expanded to evade sugar deficit
08.02.2010 13:10 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ministry of Agrarian Policy thinks it expedient to enlarge Ukrainian sugar beet sown areas within this year to 450,000 ha (up against last year 327,600 ha) in order to evade domestic market sugar deficit, reported Ivan Demchak, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy.
As to Demchak, if Ministry plan is realized, 2010 sugar beet crop will boost to about 18 mn MT (up against 10.5 mn MT in 2009), while sugar output will grow to about 2.5 mn MT (up as of 1.37 mn MT in 2009).
However, Demchak admits these results can be achieved only on condition if State grants sugar beet sowing subsidies, provides allocations for State Food Reserve sugar purchasing and cancels prices changes declaration for socially important food articles (in part., sugar).
As earlier reported, as to National Sugar Producers Association Ukrtsukor data, 2009/10 MY sugar output totaled 1.27 mn MT (sugar beet crop totaled 10 mn MT).
As to Ukrtsukor, Ukrainian domestic sugar annual consumption is 1.82 mn MT; presently Ukraine faces 500,000 MT sugar deficit.
It is to be reminded, Ukrainian Antimonopoly Committee has already begun investigating case of Ukrainian domestic market sugar prices rapid/significant boost.
