Having sown sugar beet at 402,000 ha, agrarians finished sowing
22.05.2008 08:22 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Agricultural companies have sown sugar beet at 402,000 ha and thus ended sowing, reported Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy Yaroslav Gadzalo. As to Gadzalo, agrarians have sown sugar beet only at 84% of initial planned areas. Association Ukrtsukor Chief Myckola Yarchuk declared sugar beet sown areas shortening (down to 402,000 ha against initially forecasted 480,000 ha) is to be explained with weather conditions (rains) being unfavorable for this crop sowing and domestic sugar market disadvantageous conjuncture (prices significant decline). As to Yarchuk, agrarians have shortened sugar beet sown areas also due to apprehension of raw sugar import (to be made under free trade regime) and Government declarations on domestic market sugar interventions/duty free sugar import necessity. It is to be reminded, within this year Mar Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasted this year sugar beet sown areas will total 480,000 ha.
