Hydrometeorology Center forecasts winter crops local destruction due to frost

Ukrainian Hydrometeorology Center experts forecast some regions winter crops will be destroyed locally by frost due to frost/snow absence, reported Tetiana Adamenko, Hydrometeorology Center Agrometeorology Department Chief. “I don’t think such frost will cause a great damage. Winter crops are possible to be destroyed only in a few areas… We can’t call these temperature catastrophic, yet, at same time, lack of snow layer is a very bad thing,” declared Adamenko. As to Adamenko, winter barley/rape are most possible to be destructed. She added strong frost accompanied with snow layer absence (weather conditions unfavorable for winter crops) haven’t much affected regions wherein winter barley is traditionally sown, – that is, southern regions. However, she said winter rape is quite possible to be destructed at large areas as rape had been sown all over Ukrainian territory within last year. Speaking about winter rye, Agrometeorology Department Chief said this crop is enough frost-resistant with no big problems to be expected. It is to be admitted, since early this year temperature has fallen to 15-24o below zero with snow layer well-nigh totally missing in many Ukrainian regions. Lowest temperature falls were registered in Kharkiv, Lugansk, Sumy and Chernighiv regions. Winter crops tillering nodes soil temperature dropped very low, – down to 11-16o below zero. Adamenko said more detailed forecasts on low temperatures winter crops influence are possible to be made only after frost weakening. As to Hydrometeorology Center forecasts, on Ukrainian left-bank territory such low air and winter crops tillering nodes soil temperature will remain until Jan 11. As to Center, warming/precipitations have already begun in country western regions; this cyclone is slowly moving towards Ukrainian central/eastern regions. Last year agrarians had sown winter grains at 7.6 mn ha (incl. winter rape – at 1.3 mn ha) for 2008 crop.
