FAO: More money and brains needed for ocean sustainability
28.10.2019 13:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of last week, the Our Ocean 2019 international conference (Oct 2324) was held within Oslo, Norway, FAO reports.
As to the report, the conference brought together leaders from governments, businesses, civil society and research institutions to share their experience, identify solutions and commit to action for a clean, healthy and productive ocean.
As to the report, while speaking within the conference, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said serious investments in ocean sustainability will raise the amount of fish to feed the poor, helping drive progress towards the eradication of hunger which is the lynchpin for achieving the other Sustainable Development Goals.
«Ocean protection will only succeed if we spend financial and brain power in developing sustainable solutions,» Qu stressed.
«Oceans provide us with enormous services,» Qu said, noting that global per capita fish consumption has risen to 20.3 kilograms a year and that fisheries and aquaculture provide livelihood opportunities to more than 10% of the world population.
«If the ocean fails, it is because we fail ourselves,» he stressed.
As to the report, the Director-General warned of a «dangerous sustainability divide» as fisheries in developed regions become increasingly sustainable, rebuilding stocks, while those in developing regions are not improving as fast.
One-third of the world fish stocks are overfished, and climate change is likely to negatively impact stocks in tropical zones, as to the FAO data.
Reportedly, the Director-General proposed a commitment to achieve «100 percent» effective sustainability of our resources from the oceans and noted that FAO will, as of this year Nov, host a major symposium within Rome to identify the technical solutions needed to achieve this vision.
It is to be admitted, the next year Our Ocean conference will be held within Palau.
