WHO: Congo Ebola still an international public health emergency

As of last week, WHO (UN World Health Organization) convened its Emergency Committee within Geneve on the Congo Ebola situation, UN Radio says referring to the the WHO report.
As to the report, while speaking within Committee, the WHO experts admitted the Ebola outbreak within the eastern Congo officially remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The Emergency Committee meeting recommended the countries to strengthen the sustained political commitment and continue the cross-border screenings, among other recommendations.
It is to be reminded, the outbreak began Aug 2018 and there have been 3,114 confirmed cases and 2,123 deaths, according to latest figures.
It is occurring in an area long affected by armed group activity, making insecurity the greatest concern.
As to the report, Ebola risk remains «very high» at the national and regional levels, but it is still low globally.
In meanwhile, an experimental vaccine known as rVSV-ZEBOV-GP is being used to fight the outbreak and has been shown to be effective within protecting people from the Ebola virus. So far, more than 230,000 people have been innoculated, including more than 60,00 health and frontline workers within Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi.
«This vaccine has already saved many lives in the current Ebola outbreak, and the decision by European regulator will help it to eventually save many more,» WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus admits.
