As of last week, over 100 scientific experts, from all over the world, attended the 15th meeting of the Stockholm Convention Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-15) within Rome under the auspices of the United Nations, UN Radio report.
As to the report, the experts recommended that a group of hazardous chemicals be eliminated in order to better protect human health and the environment from its harmful impacts.
As to the report, within the meeting, the experts flagged chemical compounds commonly found in carpets, leather goods and clothing, which are shown to have detrimental effects on the human nervous system, brain development, endocrine system and thyroid hormone.
Reportedly, two additional chemicals satisfy criteria set out in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), namely that they are toxic to both humans and wildlife, persist over long periods of time and can be transported over long distances via air or water.
Exposure to POPs has been linked to certain cancers, birth defects, dysfunctional immune and reproductive systems, and susceptibility to disease.
