WHO: Congo Ebola 1,000 survivors fully recovered and returned home
07.10.2019 13:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
A thousand people have already recovered from Ebola and are able to return home, UN Radio says referring to the WHO (UN World Health Organization) last week report.
As to the report, UN Chief Antonio Guterres, while on a visit to Congo, personally handed over the diploma of the thousandth survivor to a Congo woman named Kavira. As of now, Kavira has against returned to her friends and relatives.
«I thought I would not survive. But in the end, I still recovered, and now I want to tell everyone within my community what has happened and advise them to seek medical help as soon as possible,» Kavira said.
It is to be admitted, the fight against Ebola within Congo is complicated by the lack of a sound health care system, many prejudices, mistrust and even resistance of local residents, as well as armed conflict and the constant population movements.
Survivors have become «a crucial element» in gaining community trust and acceptance, Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Congo representative, admitted.
«When survivors tell communities the reason they are alive is because they sought treatment early, people believe them and are getting the help they need sooner. At the same time, having experienced the disease, they are able to offer a level of support and compassion to patients and their family members that is especially meaningful,» he stressed.
