FAO launches new efforts to protect bananas under disease threat
04.10.2019 13:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this week, FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) has launched an emergency project to curb major plant losses threatened by a fungal disease having struck banana crops within Latin America and the Caribbean, UN Radio says referring to the FAO report.
As to the report, the new project, developed within the frameworks of the FAO Technical Cooperation Programme, will work to fight the spread of Fusarium wilt, a fungal plant disease that can wipe out plantations of banana crops, upon which millions of people depend for their livelihoods.
In meanwhile, while commenting on the project, FAO Assistant Chief and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Julio Berdegué, stressed that «the role of bananas in providing food and household income in this region cannot be understated».
It is to be admitted, limiting the spreading of disease, raising awareness, engaging with farmers and developing disease recovery programmes are some of the concrete efforts FAO is implementing to mend the issue.
