FAO: Over 2 million expected to go hungry within Somalia due to low grains crop
04.09.2019 16:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Somalia 2019 grains’ crop is the poorest the country has seen since 2011, when famine strained already scarce resources, UN Radio says referring to the FAO Food Security and Nutrition Analysis United (FSNAU) latest data report,
As to the report, delayed rains within what is known as the «Gu» peak season for crop growing (Apr-Jun), and parched river beds, have led the Somalia grains’ crop to fall 70% below average within some regions, with severe hunger looming for more than 2 million people.
As to the report, if the humanitarian assistance is absent, up to 2.1 million people across Somalia will face severe hunger by this year Dec.
In meanwhile, the rainfall forecasts indicate 4555% probability of above average precipitation for the next «Deyr» cropping season (this year Oct-Dec), meaning a wetter season which «will be crucial to avoid a deterioration of the food security situation within Somalia».
It is to be admitted, as of recent, the Humanitarian community and Somali Government jointly launched a Drought Response Plan (DIRP) to cover Jun-Dec 2019; however, the US$487 million of the already received funding so far meets less than half of the total requirement.
As of now, Somali Acting Humanitarian Coordinator, George Conway, urges additional resources and a more collective response from donors, saying that"humanitarian partners stand ready to respond, by they cannot do so without sufficient resources".
