Cuba starts sugar importing
15.07.2019 21:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Within a few recent years, Cuba faced domestic sugar output decline - what has made the Cuban government to start importing the sugar Ukrainian National Association of Sugar Producers reports.
It is to be admitted, the cane sugar cultivation has been the Cuban economy basis still within its colonial period.
It is to be reminded, within its better years, Cuba shared 25% of the global total sugar output: thus, within the mid 1980’s, the Cuban sugar annual output totaled 8 million tons, with about 150 domestic sugar plants working . Now, however, the sugar plants’ number has fallen to just 50, with the Cuban sugar annual output having declined to 1.5 million tons - what has finally resulted in Cuba having started, for the first time ever, to import the sugar. Thus, as of now, Cuba imports the sugar from France. In meanwhile, the experts affirm there are no hopes for Cuba to recover its sugar high output as the country soil is already much exhausted.
