World Food Program partially suspends foods shipments to Yemen
21.06.2019 16:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The World Food Program (WFP) has partially suspended its foods’ aid shipments to Hussite-controlled areas of Yemen, UN Radio says referring to the WFP yesterday report.
As to the report, this decision has been made after long negotiations, within which WFP and the Yemeni side could not reach an agreement on how to avoid theft and ensure the delivery of assistance to the addressees.
As to the report, the WFP main goal is to feed the Yemenese hungry children, women and men. However, as within any conflict, there are people who are trying to cash in on the most vulnerable members of society. WFP officials insisted on introducing a biometric registration system that would help prevent such incidents and protect the interests of those in need within Yemen. However, they did not succeed in reaching an agreement with the Yemeni party represented by the Hussites, who control Sanaa.
As a result, WFP has decided to resort to an extreme measure, that is, partially suspend the foods’ shipments (it goes only about Sana so far). This decision will affect 850,000 people. At the same time, children suffering from exhaustion, pregnant and lactating mothers will continue to receive help.
«If we succeed in reaching an agreement on the implementation of an independent identification system, we are ready to immediately resume foods’ shipments,» the report reads.
