UN Chief: Take action on air pollution to save lives and the planet
05.06.2019 12:33 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of this week, within his video address to mark the World Environment Day (celebrated Jun 6 annually), UN Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasized the link between worsening levels of air pollution and the climate crisis, UN Radio reports.
As to Guterres, the air pollution claims seven million lives every year and damages the children’s development; also, many air pollutants cause global warming, which he described as «an existential threat.»
As to the report, Guterres reminded about his recent experience within the South Pacific island states, which he had visited last month to show solidarity with those suffering from the worst effects of climate change. Guterres said that he had seen first-hand the severe and worsening impacts of the global climate emergency.
As to him, now the global environment is facing «unprecedented perils» caused by human activity, and so the action to fight climate change is «the battle of our lives» that we must win mainly by such methods as taxing pollution, ending fossil fuel subsidies and halting the construction of new coal plants.
