26.04.2019 15:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
After over 10 years of steady advances within the malaria global fighting, the progress has leveled off, UN Radio says referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) World Malaria Report issued on the eve of the World Malaria Day (marked every 25 April). It is to be admitted, the World Malaria Day highlights the need for sustained investment and political commitment for malaria prevention, control and elimination.
As to the Report, the estimated number of malaria cases remained virtually unchanged from 2015 to 2017.
Presently about 200 million cases are reported each year, with 435,000 of them becoming fatal. It is to be admitted, 90% of all the malaria cases take place within Africa, with the main victims being children.
In meanwhile, WHO has launched a large-scale information campaign «Zero malaria starts with me», calling on the political leaders, the private sector and affected communities to take action to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, stressing: «We all have a role to play».
«Every two minutes a child dies from this preventable and treatable disease,» WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reminds.
Thus, on the World Malaria Day, WHO and other partners are promoting the «Zero malaria starts with me» campaign to keep malaria high on the political agenda, mobilize additional resources and empower communities to take ownership of malaria prevention and care.
«The time for decisive action is now,» Ghebreyesus emphasizes.
