Brunei expects domestic rice output significant boost by 2020
12.03.2018 14:29 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of last week, while speaking within the 14th Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting, Haji Ali, Brunei Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, said Brunei is going to achieve self-sufficiency within rice production from 6% (reached within 2015) up to 20% by 2020, Xinhua Net says referring to the local daily Borneo Bulletin report.
As to the report, the Minister admitted the new target was set to respond to Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah’s concern on domestic food security.
The Minister said that the new target is going to be achieved with the help of introduction of a high-yielding hybrid rice strain.
It is to be reminded, as of last year Sept, the Minister said hybrid paddy technology can have a significant impact on rice output, generate more incomes for farmers and ensure sustainability of the country rice industry.
As to him, Brunei is expected to introduce Chinese hybrid paddy varieties that can produce at least 12 tons per ha within irrigated areas.
