FAO: Dry, hot weather likely to reduce Southern African harvests
01.03.2018 13:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Southern African water sources and grains crop are under serious pressure as a long dry spell and high temperatures have taken hold within the region, UN Radio says referring to a new Special Alert issued by FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS).
As to the Alert, after record maize output within 2017, food shortages are set to worsen this year.
The Alert admits that the Southern African domestic grains reserves so far are big, but the spell of dry weather and erratic rains earlier within the season signals multiple risks to the new crop and may aggravate the impact of the Fall Armyworm pest.
The Alert says grains crop will decline, resulting in food insecurity within 2018, boosting the number of people in need of assistance.
