UNCTAD: World poorest countries need faster growth to reach SDGs
06.02.2018 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The economies of the worlds least developed countries (LDCs) need to grow faster in order to reach the ambitious 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UN Radio reports referring to
the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) new analysis.
As to the report, the analysis says that urgent action is necessary to meet the 17 SDGs, which include an end to extreme poverty and hunger.
As to the analysis, the average growth of LDCs within 2017 was about 5%; within 2018, however, it has already risen to 5.4%.
Still, thats below the 7% growth target envisioned by Goal 8, on promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
In meanwhile, Paul Akiwumi, Director of UNCTAD Division for Africa, LDCs and Special Programmes, admits the international community needs to «strengthen its support to LDCs in line with the commitment to leave no one behind».
He adds that inequalities between the poorest countries and other developing countries «risk widening».
The analysis suggests that too many LDCs remain dependent on basic commodity exports.
