WMO: Climate change impacts worsen extreme weather phenomenon around the world
19.01.2018 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
2015, 2016 and 2017 have been confirmed as the three warmest years on record, UN Radio says referring to Petteri Taalas, the Secretary-General of WMO, UN World Meteorological Organization, report.
As to Taalas, the impacts are evident in damages worth milliards of dollars, reversed development gains, and death toll in tens of thousands.
As to him, the long-term temperature trend is «far more important» than the ranking of individual years.
«Seventeen of the 18 warmest years on record have all been during this century, and the degree of warming during the past three years has been exceptional,» he said.
At the same time, Taalas adds, rising temperatures tell only a small part of the story: thus, the warmth within 2017 was accompanied by extreme weather within many countries across the globe.
The United States, for instance, had its most expensive year ever in terms of weather and climate disasters, including devastating wild fires within the California state.
Simultaneously, within other countries and regions, hurricanes, cyclones, floods and drought wreaked suffering on millions.
As to Taalas, the WMO will issue its full report on the 2017 climate conditions as soon as this year Mar.
