Somalia: UN, partners seek US$1.6 milliard to protect millions of lives from drought, famine
18.01.2018 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking within the Somali capital, Mogadishu, the OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) Coordinator for Somalia, Peter de Clercq, said though Somalia had, with the international community help, averted famine last year, the long-term solutions to avert drought, conflict and displacement must still be found, UN Radio reports .
As to Clercq, the OCHA is launching the 2018 humanitarian response plan, which calls for US$1.6 milliard to protect the lives of 5.4 million people.
«I am proud that we averted a possible famine last year. Lasting solutions […], however, out of our reach, and much more must be done to eliminate the looming threat of famine in this country,» Clercq said.
It is to be admitted, the OCHA response plan prioritizes immediate relief operations in areas with significant numbers of people living in crisis and emergency situations, and now includes a strategy to address protection gaps for those most vulnerable, such as the internally displaced, women and children.
