UNEP to receive petition calling for end to marine pollution

07.06.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — More than one million people have signed a petition that calls for the phasing-out of single-use plastic within the next five years in support of a UN initiative to end marine litter. The petition, spearheaded by the group Avaaz, will be presented to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) which launched the #CleanSeas campaign earlier this year, UN Radio reports. It is to be admitted, over 20 countries have underscored their support for the campaign, which calls for an end to single-use plastic as well as the use of microplastics in cosmetics, both of which are major contributors to marine pollution. In meanwhile, UNEP Chief Erik Solheim pointed out that more countries will have to come on board if the world is to drastically reduce the eight million tonnes of plastic already leaching into the oceans each year.
