Net is closing in on rogue fishing, says FAO Chief
02.06.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
An international accord to end illegal fishing has received added impetus with the news that Japan and Montenegro are to put their names to it, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the Agreement on Port State Measures, or PSMA, covers more than two-thirds of the global fishing industry and has the support of nearly 50 Member States. The Agreement is designed to prevent fishing boats from landing illegal catches, which are worth US$23 milliard a year.
In meanwhile, José Graziano da Silva, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Chief, welcomes the Agreement.
As to him, the Agreement promises to improve food security among coastal communities and reduce illegal activities often linked to rogue netting, such as trafficking, labour abuses and slavery.
