Indigenous peoples role in tackling climate highlighted at UN
27.04.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, a new report highlighting the role of indigenous peoples in tackling climate change has been launched by two UN agencies, UN Radio says.
It is to be admitted, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) made the report on the margins of the 16th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
The report shows the vulnerability of indigenous peoples to the effects of climate change while calling to attention their use of traditional knowledge and unique occupations to help mitigate and adapt to the effects of the changing weather.
Indigenous peoples make up 5% of the world population, but take care of an estimated 22% of the Earth surface and protect 80% of the world biodiversity.
