WFP: Undernutrition, obesity costing Latin America milliards

The combined impact of not eating enough healthy food and obesity, also known as the «double burden of malnutrition» is costing Latin American economies mallards in lost revenue, UN Radio reports referring to the World Food Programme (WFP) new study.
The study reveals that malnutrition can affect a persons health, their life expectancy, educational outcomes and productivity.
Therefore, the agency adds, it carries huge economic consequences for individuals who are affected, communities and nations.
As to the study, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) within each country shrinks every year as a result of losses is productivity caused by this double burden.
Reportedly, losses are estimated at US$500 million within Chile, representing 0.2% loss of GDP and US$4.3 milliard within Ecuador (4.3% of GDP).
