UN agencies support Yemen polio campaign
10.04.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Nearly five million children in war-torn Yemen have been protected against polio as a result of a nation-wide vaccination campaign supported by the World Bank, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Radio says referring to the WHO report.
As to the report, the campaign was launched within this year Feb and targeted children under five in all governorates of the country.
Reportedly, some 369,000 children in Sa’ada governorate between the ages of six months and 15 years were also immunized against measles.
As to the report, the WHO noted that before 2006, measles was among the leading causes of death in children under five in Yemen but rates have been driven down drastically thanks to several vaccination campaigns supported by the three partners.
The WHO adds that the two year-long conflict has «all but destroyed» the country’s health system, including programmes to immunize children from preventable diseases.
