UN: Encouraging migration can help address population ageing
04.04.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking on behalf of the UN Chief at the opening of the latest session of the Commission on Population and Development at UN Headquarters in New York, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, UN Secretary-General Chef de Cabinet, said
migration can help countries address the challenge of an ageing population, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, this year the Commission theme is on «Strengthening the demographic evidence base for the post-2015 development agenda». The Commission was established within 1946 and the Secretary-General Chef de Cabinet pointed out that since then, people are living longer and healthier lives.
As to the report, Viotti said practically all populations are growing older with some already experiencing a decline in the number of people of working age and a rise in the number of retirees.
Investing in people will help alleviate the financial difficulties associated with a greying population, she said, by fostering healthy ageing and ensuring that older people can fully participate in society.
As to the report, Viotti encouraged governments worldwide to facilitate migration that is safe, orderly and regular.
