FAO: Meeting highlights sustainable agriculture amid water scarcity
26.01.2017 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Sustainable agriculture is central to the global effort to end extreme hunger, improve nutrition and ensure adequate water supplies for all, UN Radio says referring to the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) report made within a meeting at UN Headquarters yesterday.
It is to be admitted, the meeting was focused on examining the issue of
how countries worldwide can produce food when water supplies are scarce.
As to the report, the FAO called this issue «the water-food nexus,» highlighting the link between food production and water consumption.
The FAO believes food and agriculture lie at the heart of sustainable development objectives, adding that an «innovate approach» will be required to achieve these goals.
Also, the FAO admitted the Near East and North Africa countries are possible to face «severe intensification» of water scarcity due to factors such as expanding urbanization, higher energy demands and prolonged droughts caused by the climate change.
