12.10.2016 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
While speaking early this week, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti made it even more vital to step up efforts to address cholera in the country, UN Radio reports.
As to the report, Ban has reminded that the United Nations launched a US$120 million appeal in the wake of Hurricane Matthew which had hit Haiti last week Tues, leaving hundreds dead and at least US$1.4 million in need of assistance.
The funding will cover needs for the next three months.
As to the report, Ban has also said the storm also boosted the risk of illness, including water-borne diseases such as cholera.
«As you know, I am developing a new approach to the cholera situation. This will encompass support for people affected by the disease and for efforts to build sound water, sanitation and health systems in order to help eliminate cholera in Haiti. This disaster makes it even more vital to significantly step up our support and to do so right now,» he stressed.
