30.09.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The world is «tantalizingly» close to a climate deal as India prepares to ratify the agreement at the end of the week, UN Radio says referring to David Nabarro, the UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, yesterday report.
As to the report, the internationally agreed Paris climate change agreement only comes into force legally once it is ratified by at least 55 countries (which between them produce 55% of global carbon emissions).
Reportedly, the key targets of the agreement are to keep global temperature rises below two degrees Celsius and to provide US$100 milliard a year in climate finance for developing countries by 2020.
As to the report, presently India produces over 4% of global emissions and plans to submit its ratification on this year Oct 2, to coincide with the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a pioneer of the non-violence philosophy.
«As Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his speeches at various points last week, we are tantalizingly close to the Paris Agreement entering into force,» Nabarro said.
In meanwhile, Ban has stressed: «Who would have imagined even within last year Dec, that this agreement could be possibly entering into force towards the beginning of this year Oct?»
