Candidates for UN chief will be told results of straw poll
22.07.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The 12 candidates vying to become the next UN Secretary-General will be told the results of the Security Councils first straw poll to narrow down the field, UN Radio reports referring to UN Security Council President, Koro Bessho (who briefly spoke to reporters following the initial vote held yesterday at the UN Headquarters).
As to the report, Bessho explained the purpose behind the first informal straw poll.
«It is to inform the candidates of where they stand in the race. The candidates will be informed of the results through the respective permanent representatives of nominating Member States,» he said.
It is to be admitted, earlier President of the General Assembly, Morgens Lykketoft, had sent a letter to ambassadors, stating that failing to give any details beyond the fact the straw poll had taken place «does not live up to the expectations of the membership and the new standard of openness and transparency.»
It is to be mentioned, before the meeting, United Kingdom Ambassador, Matthew Rycroft, had told reporters that it was «high time for a woman» Secretary-General, and that the region the successful candidate came from, was «the least important criteria».
