UN must plant seeds for sustained peace
15.07.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking within the UN General Assembly Informal Dialogues where candidates are invited to state their case and take questions from Member States and civil society groups, Christina Figueres, a Costa Ricas nominee for the post of Secretary-General, said the UN must plant the seeds today for a sustained peace tomorrow, UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, Figueres is a former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Peace does not begin with a crisis nor end when the hostilities cease, she said.
As to the report, Figueres underscored the importance of focusing on deeper and longer-term peacebuilding efforts rather than being more preoccupied with addressing immediate crises.
«Planting the seeds today for a sustained peace tomorrow… What I mean by that is although we have all agreed to what the term peacebuilding means I would suggest that a broader understanding of peacebuilding would lead us to understand that you do not begin to build peace after conflicts are settled but that you would build peace across an entire value chain that certainly has to do with social and environmental stability, fortunately now with a very clear framework under Agenda 2030 and has to be based on human rights and the rule of law,» she said.
It is to be admitted, Ms Figueres is one of the six women and men who have been nominated by their governments to lead the organisation after the current chief Ban Ki-moon steps down at the end of the year.
