Poroshenko: Ukraine developed and launched the first nuclear facility of global significance

As of today, within his working trip to Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko visited the National Science Center «Physical-Technical Institute of Kharkiv» where he examined the nuclear facility in the integrated test mode and the project on creation of undercritical nuclear facility «Source of Neutrons», President Petro Poroshenko Press Office reports.
As to the report, the Ukrainian President and the US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt took part in the test run of the Source of Neutrons facility.
Poroshenko called this project a good example of cooperation in the sphere of nuclear security and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. It is to be admitted, the project had been developed with the assistance of the US in the framework of programs on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
As to the report, Poroshenko emphasized that Ukraine had made a significant contribution to the program on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. It is not only voluntary abandonment of the third nuclear arsenal in the world, but also transmission of highly enriched uranium and cooperation with international organizations for the improvement of technological security.
«This is the first nuclear facility of global importance developed by Ukrainian specialists since independence,» the President said.
Petro Poroshenko noted that «this is an investment in the future». Modern technologies applied in this project prevent any accident. The President emphasized the need to increase security measures in nuclear energy, improve technologies of nuclear waste storage and study the possibility of using isotopes in medicine in order to organize their production in Ukraine and not to buy the technology abroad.
