World leaders confirm presence at Paris climate change talks
23.11.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
More than 120 world leaders have confirmed their attendance at the Global Climate Change Conference, which opens in Paris in just over a week, UN Radio says referring to the UN Assistant Secretary-General on Climate Change, Janos Pasztor, last week Fri New York report.
It is to be reminded, the Conference aims to bring about a universal agreement that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep global temperatures from rising.
Dianne Penn reports.
While speaking in New York, Mr. Pasztor told that the recent deadly terrorist attacks in Paris are affecting Conference preparations, particularly for events in areas outside the meeting site.
The French Government this week announced that a major march planned in parallel with the conference has been cancelled for security reasons.
The goal of the conference is to get the world to take action so that the average global temperature rise is kept below two degrees Celsius.
Mr Pasztor said talks ahead of the conference are already showing results.
«Various informal ministerial meetings have achieved certain convergence on some key political issues, the details of which still need to be negotiated in Paris. As of this morning, 171 countries which collectively account for more than 90% of emissions, have now submitted national climate plans with targets. If successfully implemented, these national plans bend the emission curve down to a projected global temperature rise of approximately three degrees Celsius by the end of the century.»
Although Mr Pasztor said this is progress, he stressed that it is not enough.
He said there is still work ahead to realize a «meaningful» universal climate deal.
