FAO: Social protection critical in fight against poverty and hunger
14.10.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Social protection is progressing worldwide as a critical tool to eradicate hunger. However, despite the success of social protection schemes, the vast majority of the world’s rural poor still need to have access to these programs (incl. cash transfers, public works and school meal programs),
UN Radio says referring to the FAOs annual State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) report.
The report admits that in poor countries social protection measures can have dramatic impacts on peoples well-being, including helping them move away from extreme poverty and hunger. Such programs also help improve childrens health and education opportunities.
It is to be mentioned, the FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva says there have already been many examples of positive results from social protection programs such as free school meals.
«We saw in a few months, after implementing the programmes and we are doing that in many countries in Latin America now and also in Africa, that the children wants to come to the school, stimulated by those meals and the performance also improves a lot,» da Silva admitted.
As to the report, the social protection schemes currently benefit 2.1 milliard people in developing countries. The report indicates that expanding such programs in rural areas and linking them to inclusive agricultural growth policies would rapidly reduce the number of poor people.
It is to be admitted, the report was released on the eve of the annual World Food Day commemoration (celebrated on this week Wed).
