WHO: Major crop losses have been reported in Central America following a second year of severe dry weather

As of now, a large number of farmers in Central America require support as a result of the drought, UN Radio says referring to the FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) report.
As to the FAO, the prolonged dry weather associated with the El Niño climatic phenomenon has severely reduced this years cereal outputs in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The agency says a large number of farmers are now in need of agricultural assistance amidst ongoing dry weather.

«This is the second consecutive year that the region’s main season cereal harvest has been negatively affected by severe dry weather,» FAO Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, admits.
As to the report, the El Niño-related dry spells delay the planting of crops, reduce land under cultivation and stifle crop development.
