Ukrainian President invited civil experts to join process of ensuring fair elections
29.07.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had a meeting with civil society experts on elections. The Head of State thanked the activists for their active participation in civil control over the process of elections in the 205th constituency in Chernighiv on Jul 26, President Petro Poroshenko Press Office reports.
As to the report, the President noted that these elections proved the necessity of improving the electoral legislation: increasing liability for the bribery of voters, enabling the judiciary to respond to bribery up to the disqualification of the candidate, changing the principles of forming precinct election commissions.
Reportedly, the President invited public representatives to discuss legislative steps in order to prevent violations at the future local elections of Oct 25.
As to the report, the Head of State made a public promise to submit a draft law to the Parliament following the elections in the 205th constituency.
Even though the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides for strict punishment of violators of election law, the President noted that sanctions do not stop the perpetrators.
As to the report, representative of Civil Network «OPORA» Olga Ayvazovska noted the importance of ensuring the inevitability of punishment of violators, as well as emphasized the need for informing the society on the consequences of receiving material goods from candidates.
Reportedly, she believes that in Sept one must start a broad campaign to inform about the penalty for bribing voters and educate public consciousness of voters.
