Ebola conference to generate funding and solidarity for West Africa
10.07.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
While speaking on the eve of an international pledging conference that is to be held in New York today, Dr. David Nabarro, the UN Special Envoy on Ebola, said the international community cannot afford to wait to support Ebola recovery, UN Radio reports.
As to the report,
the conference will generate commitments and financial resources to help the most-affected countries: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Reportedly, the governments of the three West African countries will be seeking US$3.2 billion to address immediate recovery needs over a two-year period. It is to be admitted, most of the affected region is now free of Ebola, which has killed more than 11,000 people.
Dr. David Nabarro admitted it is important to remain vigilant and respond quickly to any new flare-ups of the disease.
«Now, the world cant wait until the outbreak is completely over before supporting the recovery process, and thats because response and recovery are so intertwined. Youve got to get health services back in place again if there is going to be trust among the people returning and if lives and livelihoods are going to get back to normal,» he said.
It is to be reminded, yesterday the International Ebola Recovery Conference opened in New York with technical consultations.
As to the report, today the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to speak on the Conference and call for continued solidarity with the countries battling the disease when heads of state gather in New York.
