No room for "complacency" in Ebola fight in Liberia
27.11.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Though a good progress has been made in fight against the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia, the UN is warning against complacency, UN Radio reports.
As to report, more than 5,500 people have died from the disease in West Africa, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
In Liberia, the UN Ebola mission UNMEER says it plans to have two or three of its helicopters positioned in the capital Monrovia by next week to ensure the immediate dispatch of teams and supplies to any outbreak.
Besides, Stuart Kefford, UN Development Programme representative in the country, says the tide has already turned against Ebola.
«Before we were being hunted. Now we are going out to get the disease as cases are being reduced. But we should also remember we are now only at the same point as we were at the beginning of August. At the beginning of August we looked at this as being a very serious issue. So we cannot get complacent. We are still in a very bad situation. We are driving forward, we are making good progress, but we cannot get complacent,» Mr. Kefford admits.
Meanwhile the United Nations has said that it is unlikely that it will meet its 1 December target to safely bury 70 per cent of the dead and treat 70 per cent of the sick across the region.
