FAO: Civil society preparing for international nutrition conference in Rome
17.11.2014 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Civil society groups working on food and nutrition related issues are meeting in Rome, Italy to prepare for the first intergovernmental conference to address the worlds nutrition problems in the 21st century, UN Radio says referring to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report.
As to the report, the two-day preparatory event starting on this week Monday will turn into the Second International Nutrition Conference (ICN2) taking place from 1921 November at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Reportedly, co-organized with the World Health Organization (WHO), ICN2 will bring together relevant ministries, agencies, and organizations to identify priorities for enhanced international cooperation on nutrition.
As to the report, the global economy, food systems and the nutritional status of populations have changed significantly since the first global conference on nutrition in1992.
Also, FAO says a new policy framework and more appropriate responses are needed, with now more than half the worlds population affected by malnutrition.
At the Conference the civil society organizations will together be discussing what is at stake in their respective countries and regions. Reportedly, they are also expected to study outcome documents to be endorsed at the conference, which will reportedly bind countries to take ten steps to translate their commitments for nutrition into action.
