FAO: Somalia faces humanitarian crisis following drought then flooding
03.11.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Somalia is on the verge of another humanitarian crisis as a poor rainy season followed by severe flooding threatens local harvests, UN Radio says referring to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) last week Friday report.
As to report, more than one million people are now in critical need of assistance.
Reportedly, there’s been a 20 per cent increase in just six months in the number of Somalis requiring urgent humanitarian help.
UN Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric says the conditions today are worse than during the last famine in the region.
«Close to 260,000 people died in the 20102012 famine in Eastern Africa - more than half of those children under the age of five - and the FAO says that many current food security indicators across Somalia resemble or are worse than those seen in that pre-famine period,» Mr. Dujarric admits.
Besides, FAO says an additional two million people are experiencing threats to their food security.
The agency is appealing for $49 million to stave off disaster in the country.
