E-cigarettes use poses a threat to adolescents and pregnant mothers, says WHO
27.08.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Electronic-cigarettes known as e-cigarettes pose a threat to peoples health and efforts made to discourage adolescents from smoking, NRCU says referring to the
the World Health Organization (WHO) Aug 26 report on regulating e-cigarettes which are marketed by manufacturers as aids to quit smoking, or as healthier alternatives to tobacco.
As to the report, since 2005, the product has created a global industry with 466 brands worth an estimated $3 billion a year.
«Evidence shows that while they are likely to be less toxic than conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes use poses threats to adolescents and fetuses of pregnant mothers using these devices. E-cigarettes also increase the exposure of non-smokers and bystanders to nicotine and a number of other toxicants, the report indicates, and existing evidence also shows that e-cigarettes aerosol is not merely, as is often quoted, water vapour,» Douglas Bettcher, the Director of Prevention of Non-communicable Diseases at WHO, says.
