Ukrainian Parliament passes law on adapting laws in food industry to EU standards

The Ukrainian Parliament has supported draft law No. 4179A, which stipulates the harmonization of laws of Ukraine and the European Union in the area of food safety and quality, NRCU reports.
As to report, a total of 230 out of 256 lawmakers registered in the session hall supported the law on amendments to some Ukrainian laws regarding food. The document foresees the introduction of the European food safety and quality guarantee system based on the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) procedures. The law says that a single supervision agency in the area of food safety will be created, permit documents and procedures that are not used in the EU will be canceled, European principles of regulating genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will be introduced, in particular, in part of the registration of GMO sources and not food made of them. The lawmakers supported at first reading draft law No. 4986–1 on the state control aimed to check the compliance with laws on safety and quality of food and fodder, health of livestock and draft law No. 4055A on animal byproducts that are not used as meal by humans. As to earlier reports, the profile agricultural organizations’ and associations several times asked the Ukrainian government and Parliament to pass the above-mentioned laws which are required to adapt Ukrainian laws to the European laws in the area of food and livestock.
