International Day of Families celebrated at UN

Strengthening families as units of societies can help to move countries to the next stage of development,
UN Radio says referring to the representative of a Kenyan non-governmental organization report.
The report was made as the United Nations commemorates the International Day of Families on 15 May to recognize their contributions to societies.
Raymond Mutura of Voice of the Family in Africa International is attending a meeting at the UN to discuss the role of families in the post-2015 development agenda, the theme of the commemoration.
«If we are able to strengthen the unit of the family, probably through education or advocating for an appropriate policy, then it should be important to move different countries to the next stage of development,» Mr. Mutura admits.
In his message for the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the International Day of Families recognizes the meaningful contributions that families make to advance the mission of the United Nations.
By providing economic and emotional sustenance to their members, Mr. Ban added, families can raise productive, caring citizens committed to the common good.
He called for the mobilization of the worlds families to usher in a more sustainable future, achieve the anti-poverty goals known as the MDGs, shape a new development agenda and combat climate change.
