WHO: One person dies of alcohol-related illness every ten seconds

One person dies of alcohol related conditions every ten seconds, UN Radio says referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) report «Global status report on alcohol and health 2014» launched on Mon.
The report highlights the need for governments to develop policies to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, to raise awareness about the problem and to provide prevention and treatment services.
Dr. Shekhar Saxena is Director of WHOs Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse.
«Worldwide, alcohol was responsible for 3.3 million deaths in 2012 which is nearly six per cent of all the deaths in the world. This actually translates into one death every death in ten seconds which is very large compared to many other diseases about which we hear everyday in the newspapers. The harmful use of alcohol contributes to more than 200 health conditions,» Dr. Saxena admits.
Among the health conditions caused by alcohol are liver cirrhosis, some cancers, as well as infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia.
In addition, harmful drinking says WHO, can lead to violence and injuries.
